Mental Health First Aid Training course Half Day

Completion of Besure Training's Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health will give the learner an understanding of what mental health is, why people develop Mental Health conditions and the role of a First Aider for Mental Health. Helping the person to define mental health, demonstrate understanding of the stigma surrounding Mental Health and Identify factors that can affect a person’s mental health. 

The course will help the delegate to know how to provide advice     and practical support for a person presenting a Mental Health condition. As well as outline the advice that should be provided to a person suffering from a suspected mental health condition. The training will also train the Mental Health First Aider when to contact the emergency services in respect of first aid for mental health.

The course will also train the Mental Health First Aider to recognise and manage stress. Helping the MHFA to Identify signs of stress, state how stress can be managed.

The learners will also know how to recognise a range of mental health conditions being able to state signs and/or symptoms for the following mental health conditions:      

• Depression      

• Anxiety      

• Psychosis      

• Eating disorders      

• Suicide      

• Self-harm 

Duration

A minimum of 4 hours spread over at least one day.

Ideally, the course should be run in one day, but must be completed within 2 weeks of starting the course, with each training session a minimum of two hours.

Syllabus

A range of First Aid for Mental Health related subjects are covered including:
• What is First Aid for Mental Health?
• Identifying mental health conditions
• Providing advice and starting a conversation
• Stress
• Mental health conditions

Assessment

A range of methods are used, including practical and questioning, at the end of the course there is a 30 minute open and multiple-choice assessment paper to be completed.

Numbers 

A maximum of 16 students are allowed and must be a minimum of 14 years of age and a certificate can be offered to all, subject to assessment. A student cannot assume a responsibility in the workplace until they reach the age of 16, and then it is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that the student is suitable for that role. The certificate is a lifelong qualification but it is recommended that refresher training is carried out every 3 years.

Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health Qualification

On successful completion of BeSure  Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health training course, you will be awarded a Ofqual  Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health. Course fees include certification and registration with FAA & Ofqual.
